Area Rights Of Way Officer

Job Introduction

The Countryside and Rights of Way Services operates across the Bradford District and has responsbility for rights of way management, designated site management and biodiversity. The Rights of Way part of the team manage routes such as the Pennine Way as it crosses the South Pennine Moors in the north west of the district and the Dales Way as it follows the River Wharfe valley below the iconic Ilkley Moor, part of the Bradford Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve. The RoW Team also manage peri-urban and urban footpaths across the district.

Applications are invited for the post of Area Rights of Way Officer within the Countryside and Rights of Way team based in Britannia House, Bradford. The role is a fixed-term post of two years with potential for extension. The post is available while team members are seconded to other roles in the team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for rights of way management within parts of the district – both urban and rural.  The work will involve contributing to the Service targets for completion of definitive map, enforcement and public path order programmes; agreeing maintenance requirements and responding to planning applications and will include implementing elements of the Highway Act 1980, the Town and Country Planning Act and Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

  • Successful candidates will be experienced, enthusiastic and committed to protecting and promoting the rights of way network.  
  • You must have the ability to liaise effectively with a range of people (landowners, interest groups, developers, other council officers).
  • A working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures is required.
  • Experience of resolving conflicts between users and landowners, researching the status of routes and accurately recording information.
  • Computer, written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Be prepared to work across the district, sometimes in remote locations.

Ideally the successful candidate will be a member of the Institute of Public Rights of Way Officers.
