Job Introduction
Funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Bradford Council's Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) aims to transform Bradford Council so it becomes evidence-led, and data driven, at all levels of decision-making to improve the wider determinants of health and reduce health inequalities.
The HDRC is building research infrastructure to transform our understanding of our people, places, determinants and approaches that have the greatest impact on health inequalities. It will allow Bradford Council to be able to choose, use and generate research independently so it is an equal and effective partner in Bradford’s research environment.
Our team is made up of researchers, data scientists, academics, policy makers and public contributors who work closely with departments across the Council to improve the way research is conducted, data is handled and evidence is acted upon.
Our partners include the world-renowned research programmes of Bradford Institute for Health Research and the Born in Bradford cohort study. These provide a foundation for developing a whole council and system approach to using research to drive policy. This work will build on and amplify existing programmes including City of Research and Connected Data.
About this role
We are seeking to appoint a HDRC data manager on a fixed-term basis until 31 September 2027. This opportunity has arisen thanks to the current data manager having been awarded an NIHR pre-doctoral fellowship. This is a full-time position, but applications for less than part-time working are welcome.
This is a key role in the HDRC. The post holder will be involved in shaping a vision for how Bradford Council can become a truly data-informed council. The successful candidate will lead our work on better use of data to understand the building blocks of health and to improve the use of data in decision making across the Council and its partners. If you are excited about the potential for data and intelligence to improve the lives of people living in Bradford, this is the role for you.
The post holder will manage the small team of data scientists, leading the delivery of data and information to drive the work and priorities of the HDRC and Council. They will work closely with data and intelligence leads across the system, including close work with the team at the Bradford Institute for Health Research, home of the Born In Bradford cohort study and Connected Bradford linked data set, as well as with wider academic partners.
About you
We are looking for an experienced data scientist. You will have experience of using statistical methods to analyse complex data and produce insights to inform senior decision makers.
Experience of managing analytical teams, working with stakeholders in a public sector and wider context, as well as the ability to communicate results from complex analyses to non-specialist audiences will be important in this role.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience of data engineering and shaping data strategies across complex organisations, particularly in the public sector.
For more information, please see the attached job description and person specification.
We welcome the potential for secondments to this role from within the Council, all applicants for Secondments must have prior approval from their line manager in advance.
A disclosure check with the Disclosure & Barring Service will be sought for all appointees.
