Job Introduction
The main responsibilities of this role:
- To be responsible for and drive a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) of up to 32 tonnes and to work as a member of a team engaged in the collection and disposal of refuse from domestic and commercial properties in accordance with relevant legislation and the Council’s Policies and Procedures as required.
- To liaise with members of the public and businesses, with a focus on improving recycling participation and customer satisfaction.
- To be responsible for up to 3 colleagues, ensuring all PPE is worn and all waste collection/Health & Safety procedures are followed.
- Responsible for operation of the in-cab waste collection device to allow management to collate accurate data including weights (for accurate electronic invoicing) , missed bins and contamination.
- To promote and deliver a fair and high quality service that is sensitive to the needs of all communities in the District.
- To undertake relevant training and development activities and to assist with training of new colleagues and highlight any areas of concern.
- Assist in the handling of customer complaints, service improvements and trialing of new technologies in liaison with Managers within the Service.
- To ensure safety of other road-users and the public are a key priority whilst operating the vehicle and collecting bins. Must be fully aware of surroundings including parked/moving vehicles, access restrictions and pedestrians at all times.
- Complete legal and statutory paperwork and reports such as; vehicle records, defect reports, accident forms, tachographs or other associated information as necessary.
- Be fully aware of vehicle maintenance requirements, operator requirements and undertake/record daily vehicle checks and ad-hoc basic maintenance of vehicle including; refueling, cleaning, oils, water, grease points etc.
- Be competent with all ancillary systems fitted to the collection vehicle including; camera systems, in-cab devices, weighing systems, bin lift and compaction equipment.
- Responsible for fire safety and evacuation of the crew ensuring a 3 meter safety zone is established additionally responsible for training new crew members in vehicle fire evacuations.
- Responsible for up to £250,000 of vehicle/equipment asset, security/inspection and safety of vehicle load.
