The Sustainability Services Team within Department of Place is committed to creating a healthier, more sustainable environment in the Bradford district. This team plays a crucial role in managing and implementing initiatives that promote clean air, reduce carbon emissions, and support the council’s sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean Air Zone Operation and Enforcement: Managing the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) to ensure compliance with air quality standards and reduce vehicle emissions.
- Statutory Air Quality Functions: Monitoring and reporting on air quality and implementing measures to meet statutory requirements.
- Sustainability Programmes Delivery: Developing and executing programmes that promote further air quality sustainability improvements.
- Climate Emergency and Net Zero Commitment: Leading efforts to reduce the council’s carbon footprint and achieve net zero emissions.
- Promoting a Sustainable Culture: Integrating sustainability principles across all council departments and encouraging sustainable practices in the wider community.

Role Description
We are looking for a Sustainability Programmes Delivery Manager to join our dedicated team in the Department of Place’s Sustainability Service. This role is an opportunity to make a real difference in our vibrant and diverse city.
The Sustainability Service is now recruiting for a senior management role to lead this ongoing programme of work on new environmental challenges and deliver new opportunities for Clean Growth across the District. Successful applicants will have experience of developing and implementing new strategies and initiatives, best practice and operational frameworks for wider transformative activities across Council Departments and external stakeholder groups, to limit collective impact on the climate and ensure residents, businesses and public sector partners can adapt to the challenges of the future.
The main responsibilities of this role:
- To take strategic responsibility and lead the delivery of Environmental and Sustainability strategy and policy by designing and implementing a comprehensive programme of activities and initiatives to address the Climate Emergency, Net Zero targets and Environmental Challenges, reducing Carbon, GHG and air pollutants to improve Air Quality and ensure sustainable use of resources, accelerating the transition to a Circular Economy across the Bradford District.
- To provide strategic and inspirational leadership within and outside the Council to develop and deliver these strategies, enabling wider transformative activities across Council Departments and external stakeholder groups, to limit collective impact on the climate and ensure residents, businesses and public sector partners can adapt to the challenges of the future.
- Directly responsible to the Assistant Director, Sustainability, to work with Council departments and external partners, leading a team of principal officers, project managers and officers in the development and delivery of a range of multi £m (£1m-£30M) Sustainability programmes to meet Climate Action, Net Zero, Carbon Reduction, GHG and Air Pollutant targets, ensuring consistent, strategic and sustainable outcomes. This work will be predominantly unsupervised and with a very high degree of delegated responsibility on issues relating to Environmental Sustainability that impact on a District-wide basis.
