Waste Collections Manager (Food Waste)

Job Introduction

This post is only open to Bradford Council Employees who are on Established or Fixed Term Contract because the Council has to consider employment opportunities for its workforce.

Waste Services are looking to recruit two Waste Collection Managers to oversee daily service provision in relation to the Simpler Recycling reform on behalf of the Council. This will include implementation of changes to service delivery, to comply with: Food Waste collections.

 Main responsibilities of role: 

  1. Manage daily service provision within the waste collections team to improve service delivery to the district and avoid complaints.
  2. Liaise with residents, businesses, Neighbourhood Wardens, and Elected Members with a focus on improving recycling participation and customer satisfaction.
  3. Manage the collection, analysis and reporting of data received from the In-Cab devices and Body Cameras for the provision of managing poor and good performance.
  4. Ensure all accidents and emergencies on the public highway involving waste collection vehicles are attended to and vehicle accident forms are completed.
  5. To prepare and assist the Waste Collections Service Manager in presenting reports and statistics to senior managers and directors.
  6. Provide a thorough induction for all staff and ensure that the standard operating procedures are kept up to date and communicate to staff.
  7. Carry out annual appraisals and ensure these are linked to regular supervisions. 
  8. Ensure operatives are fully conversant with the role they undertake, and have the relevant qualifications, ability and competence.
  9. Organise and chair regular crew meetings and communicate with all staff on a regular basis on service, departmental and corporate issues. 
  10. Manage safe use of cars, vans and waste collection vehicles (plus ancillary equipment), up to 32 tonnes in gross vehicle weight.
  11. Continually research, advise and implement change in relation to management and compliance with the waste industry.
  12. Directly responsible to the Waste Collection Service Manager, the post holder is essentially self-supervising and will be expected to exercise considerable initiative and professional judgement in carrying out the duties within the Authority’s policies and procedures.
  13. To liaise with the key stakeholders across all other sections within the Authority.
  14. To attend monthly management reviews to demonstrate ways in which the collection service can incorporate new challenges in the way it delivers the service.
  15. To carry out investigations, welfare meetings and present findings and/or reports as required.

 Applicants must have: 

  • Experience in waste collections and or waste disposal management
  • Experience of heavy goods vehicle, driver and waste legislation 
  • Level 3 management qualification and or equivalent management experience
  • HGV category C driving license preferred – 7.5 tonne to 32 tonne vehicle driving may be required.  

The role will be:

  • Based at Harris Street Depot, Bradford but may be required to travel to depots around the district as required.
  • Monday to Friday 37 hours with flexible working between 7am and 5pm.
  • Bank holiday and weekend working may be required.
